A careful inspection of the manual (page 23, Section 7-2, RF UNIT) revealed that if you cut a small (green) wire on the RF UNIT, you would get xmit capability on the WARC bands.
I did cut the wire, and now the rig transmits normally on the 10, 18 and 24.5 MHz bands. No one I told about this mod knew about it, so I send it to you...
